Utah was the 45th state admitted to the
Union on Jan 4, 1896.
It is one of the 'Four Corners' states.
Utah is
bordered by Idaho in the north,
Wyoming in the northeast,
Colorado in the east,
New Mexico to the southeast,
Arizona in the south,
and by Nevada in the west.
Running down the northern center of the state is the Wasatch Mountain Range,
with heights of about 12000 ft (3650 m) above sea level.
Running east to west in the northeastern section are the Uinta Mountains,
which reach heights of 13000 ft (3950 m).
The name "Utah" is derived from the
native Ute language,
meaning "people of the mountains".
Western Utah is mostly arid desert.
Small mountain ranges and rugged terrain punctuate the landscape.
Much of the scenic southern landscape is sandstone.
The Colorado River and its tributaries carve their way through this sandstone.
Utah has an area of 219887 km² (84899 mi²).
Vast expanses of this state are nearly uninhabited.
WEATHER
Utah's temperatures are extreme, from cold temperatures in winter
due to high elevation, to very hot summers statewide.
The record high temperature is 118° F (47° C).
The record low is -69° F (-56° C).
Utah
has a dry, mostly desert climate.
The dry weather results mostly from the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada.
The eastern half of the state lies in the rain shadow of the Wasatch Mountains.
Most of the lowland areas receive less than 12 in (300 mm) of
precipitation annually.
The Great Salt Lake Desert is the driest place in
Utah,
with less than 5 in (125 mm).
Snowfall is common in all but the far southern valleys.
Salt Lake City gets about 60 in (150 cm).
Some parts of the Wasatch Mountains receive up to 500 in (1270 cm) per year
During winter, temperature inversions are an issue across Utah's
low basins and valleys, leading to thick haze and fog that sometimes
happen for weeks at a time.
There are usually fewer than 40 days of thunderstorm activity per year.
