official date of admission as the 17th state
was Mar 1, 1803.
Prior to that, indigenous nations inhabiting this area
included Shawnees, Ottawas,
Iroquois, Miamis, Wyandots, Delawares,
Mingos, and Eries.
The state's name comes from the Seneca language, and means "beautiful river".
Ohio has an estimated population

More than 50% of the annual rainfall occurs during the growing season,
from May to October.
Cincinnati had the most average annual

Snowstorms occur along the shore of Lake Erie.

the Corn Belt.
Some of the food items produced are Swiss cheese, eggs, tomatoes, milk,
corn, soybean, grapes, hogs, poultry, and apples.
There is a small commercial fishing sector on Lake Erie.
The principal catch is yellow perch.
Many seaports are found along the 312 miles (502 km)
of Lake Erie coastline.
