Saint Paul,
Minnesota's capital city since 1849,
and Minnesota's most populous city,
Minneapolis, combined,
are known as the Twin Cities metropolitan area,
home to about 60% of the state's population,
and the center of the state's transportation, business, and industry.
Before European settlement, the area now called
Minnesota was populated by the Anishinaabe, and the Dakota.
The state name comes from the Dakota language:
Mnisota,
meaning 'sky~tinted water' or 'somewhat clouded water'.
Today, the state is known as the "Land of 10,000 Lakes".
The first Europeans were French fur traders that arrived in the 1600s.
Minnesota became the
32nd state on May 11, 1858.
The state borders Lake Superior on the northeast;
the remainder of the eastern border is with
Wisconsin.
Iowa is to the south,
North Dakota and
South Dakota are to the west,
and the Canadian
provinces of Ontario and Manitoba
are north. Minnesota is the only state
(other than Alaska)
with land north of the 49th Parallel.
The state is known for moderate progressive politics
and social policies, civic involvement, and high voter turnout.
It ranks among the healthiest states by a number of measures,
and has one of the most highly educated and literate populations.
WEATHER
Minnesota has a continental climate,
with very cold, often frigid winters
and warm summers.
Temperature extremes between the year's
highs and lows, from –60°F to 114°F (–51°C to 46°C),
are more than 170°F (95°C).
Average annual precipitation ranges from 20 inches (50 cm)
in the northwest,
to 35 inches (90 cm) further south and east.
The growing season is 160 days or more in the south~central and
southeastern regions, but 100 days or less in the northern counties.
Heavy snowfalls occur from November to April,
averaging 70 inches (180 cm) annually
in the northeast and 30 inches (75 cm)
in the southeast.
Cold winters, hot summers, rain, snow, hail, blizzards,
polar fronts, tornadoes, thunderstorms, and high~velocity
straight~line winds are all regular events.
Blizzards usually hit Minnesota twice each winter, and
about 18 tornadoes hit the south part of the state every year.
ECONOMY
Once primarily a producer of raw materials,
Minnesota's economy has transformed in
the last 2 centuries to focus on finished products and services.
Perhaps the most significant characteristic of the
state economy is its diversity.
The manufacturing sector includes technology and biomedical firms
in addition to the older original food processors and heavy industry.
Although employing less than 1% of the state population,
the agricultural sector is a major part of the state's economy,
ranking 6th in the nation in the value of products sold.
Minnesota is the country's largest producer of sugar beets, sweet corn
& green peas for processing, and farm~raised turkeys.
Forestry, including logging, pulpwood processing, paper production,
and wood products manufacturing, is a strong economic contributor.
Minnesota produced a significant portion of
the world's iron~ore for over a century.
The high~grade ore is now depleted, but taconite mining continues.
The state is the country's 4th~largest producer of wind power,
and was the first to mandate the use of ethanol fuel, which it
also produces.
The port of Duluth is an important international
transportation hub;
shipping vast quantities of ore, coal,
and agricultural products.
The Minnesota Chamber of Commerce
is the state's largest and premier business advocacy organization.
As the statewide voice of business,
the Chamber represents more than 2600 businesses
of all types and sizes across Minnesota.
The Chamber excels at offering private~sector
solutions to public~sector problems,
and is committed to advancing public policy and
job growth strategies that create an environment
for businesses state~wide to prosper.
