Iowa is located in the midwestern
region of the
United States.
The state is named for the Ioway people,
a Siouan tribe of Native Americans.
It became the 29th state to
join the U.S. on Dec 28, 1846.
The Mississippi River separates Iowa from
Illinois and Wisconsin to form the eastern boundary of the state.
The Missouri River on the west edge of the state, forms
the border for Nebraska.
The northwest corner of Iowa is bordered by South Dakota.
To the north is Minnesota and the south is bordered by Missouri.
The topography of the state is gently rolling plains
with several natural lakes.
Iowa has an estimated population of 3 million.
WEATHER
Iowa has a humid climate throughout the state
with extremes of both heat and cold.
The Iowa summers are known for heat and humidity.
Daytime temperatures often approach 90 ° F (32 ° C)
and sometimes exceed 100 °F (38 ° C).
Winters are brisk and snowfall is common.
Spring ushers in the beginning of the severe weather season.
Iowa averages about 50 days of thunderstorm activity per year.
Tornadoes are common during the spring and summer months,
on average 37 annually.
ECONOMY
The Iowa Chamber Alliance
is a non~partisan coalition that represents Chambers of Commerce and

the state.
The Alliance's mission is to put forth and enact

of proactive programs that stimulate economic growth
opportunities for the residents of Iowa.

The Iowa Business Council
has evolved from a research and advisory organization
to a proactive advocacy group asserting leadership

Members include the top executives of 19 of the largest
businesses in the state, 3 university
presidents, and the president and CEO of Iowa’s
largest banking association.
Their mission is to engage the personal commitment
of its executive members in active leadership roles
on major initiatives that offer opportunities to
enhance Iowa’s overall economic vitality.
Iowa's main agricultural outputs are hogs, corn, soybeans, oats,
cattle, eggs and dairy products.
While agriculture continues to be the state's dominant industry,
Iowa produces a wide variety of products
and services such as food processing, machinery,
electric equipment, chemical products, publishing,
primary metals,
refrigerators, washing machines, fountain pens and
farm implements that are exported around the world.
Iowa produces the nation's largest amount of ethanol.
Des Moines serves as a center for the insurance industry.
SCHOOLS
Iowa takes pride in its education system.
The state has the 3rd highest graduation rate in
the United States,
at over 90%.
Iowa continually ranks in the top 3 for ACT and SAT scores.
There are 3 state universities:
the University of Iowa,
Iowa State University, and the
University of Northern Iowa;
plus many private colleges and universities and community colleges.
